About this course
Supervision failures are rarely caring failures. They are system failures — a blind corner nobody mapped, a transition with no handoff, a count that came out right while a child was somewhere else. This course gives you the practical systems that keep every child in view, every day.
It is built around the six strategies of active supervision from the Office of Head Start, and it covers infants through school-age. You will work through real classroom scenarios — nap time, a playground count, a bathroom transition — and see how supervision breaks down even when no rule was broken.
What you will learn
- Set up the environment so sight lines work for you instead of against you
- Position staff using zone defense and a spoken handoff script
- Scan and count with name-to-face counting, so a right number never hides a missing child
- Listen for what you cannot see, across languages and for children who do not vocalize distress
- Anticipate behavior and recognize the moments before a supervision gap opens
- Engage and redirect in ways that keep children both safe and supported
You will also learn the difference between being present, supervising, and actively supervising — and why ratio is the floor, not the ceiling.
How it works

- Take the test. Fifteen questions, 80% to pass, up to three attempts, with feedback on every question.
